Jefferey Angles 先生 の レクチャー
I found Professor Angles' lecture very interesting as well as all of the poems he read to us. He communicated very clearly the joy of becoming a new person through learning a new language. I thought his life story was very interesting, having studied abroad in High School then returning to Japan to translate and finally gaining his own voice as a writer. His poem about the fire spinning festival was very interesting because it showed how he felt that he was entering a fantastical new world in Japan and through the Japanese language. I found the poem about Grammar very interesting and inspiring because it speaks about how grammar can restrict you at first but you gradually depend on it less. In many of the poems, I could recognize many characters as well as use of the te form and verbs that I recognized. I also thought his discussion of accents was interesting because usually accents are seen as a bad thing, but he showed appreciation for them. The food afterwards was also great and I enjoyed the Japanese candy.
