YOASOBI - アイドル

アイドル

YOASOBI

I decided to listen to another YOASOBI song because I liked the first one I listened to, and because it was listed on Spotify as a hit in Japan right now. This song was very upbeat and energetic, the kind that makes you want to bop your head along to the beat. There were a lot of rap breakdowns that I enjoyed. As the title describes, the song is about an idol who has the spotlight on her. I discovered when looking into the song that it is actually an opening for an anime called 推しの子, which seems like a dark story about fame. This made sense, because some points in the song sounded angry or frustrated instead of happy. I have linked it below with both Japanese and English subtitles.

I was happy to discover that I could recognize many words from class and even ones we haven't formally covered such as the word for romantic love and for "lie." I also recognized grammatical structures for how to say because, but, etc. The plain form was also used frequently, which I could pick up on. The faster rap parts were harder, but there were definitely parts here and there that I recognized. I also acquired some cultural knowledge about how intense it is to be a pop idol in Japanese culture.

  1. I am absolutely in love with this song, its literally such a bop! I've been streaming it nonstop ever since I first listened to it. I love how upbeat it is (similar to alot o the idol songs that I usu listen to), but it has some dark+ minor intonations that makes the song sound sinister.
