Blue Lock Episode 20

Blue Lock

This week, I caught up to Blue Lock and I watched the newest episode today. Blue Lock is an anime about top soccer players in Japan competing in an intense program to create Japan's "best new striker" to raise Japan on the international soccer stage. The anime is full of betrayals, twists and turns, and action. It is quite fast paced. I am really enjoying this anime because it takes a sport I was not really interested in (soccer) and makes it more entertaining using unique art and animation styles and interesting characters.

I noticed that a lot of the characters were young and in the same social status, so they used a lot of casual speech. Moreover, they were competitors so I could sense that they were probably speaking impolitely. I recognized greetings and honorifics in this episode. I also learned the word for win in Japanese. I noted that characters used a lot of katakana words such as "shooting" and "dribbling," perhaps because soccer is a very international sport. One cultural/linguistic difference I noted is that characters used the word "genius" to describe naturally gifted soccer players, while in America "genius" normally only refers to someone with a superior IQ.
