Over fall break, I watched the anime premiere of Chainsaw Man, a popular manga. I haven't read the manga so I went into the show with little knowledge. I really enjoyed it and I can't wait to watch more! It is about a poor man who owes a debt to the Yakuza after his father's death, so he worked for them as a demon hunter with the help of his only friend, a demon dog with a chainsaw on its head! When they are both attacked by zombies, his demon dog saves his life by fusing their bodies, and the protagonist becomes a Chainsaw Man with a chainsaw for a head and chainsaw hands. In the second episode, he joins a government demon hunter group, finally getting a real job and living in a nice apartment.
Overall, the show was very well-animated and introduced a lot of interesting characters that I want to learn more about. The action is very engaging and I'm looking forward to seeing where the plot goes and how the main characters become stronger fighters and closer friends. It was also very funny, making me laugh out loud a lot!
I was able to follow along more to the subtitles and tried to read the different billboards or building signs, which was made easier due to my increased knowledge of Katakana. I noticed different ways of saying "goodbye" and "thank you." I also acquired cultural knowledge about Tokyo, as the show is set there - for instance, the characters enjoy the Japanese Udon from a food truck.
