Cyberpunk: Edgerunners E1

This week, I decided to try out Cyberpunk: Edgerunners on Netflix because of Kingery-San's recommendation on his blog, because I have played Cyberpunk 2077 and loved the game, and because I enjoy sci-fi and action. I watched only the first episode but I can't wait to see more!

Summary

In the first episode of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, the show opens with a crime scene featuring a cybernetic fighter, but then switches to the story of the main character, David, who lives in poverty with his mother. After he gets in trouble for crashing his school's technological system, he gets in an argument with his mother in the car, where they are caught between the crossfire of gang members. He later gets in a fight with a bully in his school and is beaten badly. He then finds out that his mother died and has a breakdown before deciding to get an illegal cybernetic implant, which is where the episode leaves off.

Initial Thoughts

Overall, I really enjoyed this episode, especially because of the smooth animation and unique art style. The scenes were very colorful and the techno music contributed to a very futuristic feel. I liked that it didn't start out with a big explanation but instead slowly revealed the main character's situation and what the setting of the show was. It made me feel pity for the main character and anger at his situation, which only made it more exciting to think of what comes next for him as he has just hit rock bottom and can only go up from there.

Japanese Study Outcomes

Because I know the polite speech only, some of this show was difficult to understand because there was a lot of casual speech and slang, especially because many characters were gang members. I was able to pick up on some polite speech, however, when the main character's mother was called in to speak to his principal about his behavior. I was also excited when I recognized the word for "yesterday" and "school."
