Why I Chose to Study Japanese
こんにちは! Hello everyone! My name is Ava, or Hyde-san in Japan. I chose to study Japanese because since I was very young, my older brothers would watch anime with me like Dragon Ball Z. This exposed me to the Japanese language early, and began my interest in anime. Ever since then, I've watched many popular anime such as Naruto, One Piece, Attack on Titan, and over 100 more! I also love Studio Ghibli movies, especially Howl's Moving Castle (my favorite!), Castle in the Sky, Ponyo, etc. I've watched some live action Japanese shows and movies, and one of my favorites is Alice in Borderland. I can't wait for the next season! On top of that, I have recently been reading manga such as Berserk and Vagabond. Thus, it made sense for me, when choosing a language to fulfill my A&L requirement, to pick one that I've listened to a lot but can't speak, read, or write yet. I'm most excited to learn how to converse in Japan, and I'm so thrilled at the opportunity to study abroad in Japan - right now I think I want to go to Kyoto!
Hey, Ava. I can relate to your interest in learning Japanese through media. I am the youngest in my family. I remember my older brothers would watch popular anime like Dragon Ball Z and Samurai Champloo that would air on Adult Swim back in the day. I remember thinking as a kid, "those are such cool cartoons!" But I guess the best experience I've had with Japanese entertainment has been through a game called Ni No Kuni. It is to this day my favorite video game of all time and its experience has stuck with me ever since it came out (over ten years now)! It was like pokemon but better! And then I learned that Studio Ghibli actually did the animation for the first game. I see that you've listed a lot of shows you've watched. I recently watched Alice in Borderland on Netflix and loved it. I need some shows to watch so I can have listening material, so if you have any recommendations I'd be glad to receive any. Cheers.
ReplyDeleteHowl's Moving Castle is one of my favorite Ghibli movies too! It's so good, especially the soundtrack! Ni Nu Kuni is an absolutely stunning and wholesome game. I hope I get to finish it one day!
ReplyDeleteHi Ava! My favorite Ghibli movie is Howl's Moving Castle as well and I love the music (usually made by Joe Hisaishi) a lot as well! One of the music in Howl's Moving Castle - Merry Go Round of Life is my favorite one. Also many animations you watched such as one punch is also my type. Hope we can watch them together in some time!
ReplyDeleteHi Ava! I love this! The study abroad opportunity is so exciting. Out of curiosity, why are you thinking Kyoto? It's such a beautiful city, and I hope you love it if you're able to go!
ReplyDeleteI love anime as well and its a huge reason why I chose to study Japanese. Do you like all anime or are you primarily a shonen watcher? my favorite shonen is probably Hunter x Hunter, have you seen it? if so what are your thoughts on it?
ReplyDeleteI'm in the same boat. I actually just started reading Vagabond and Berserk, I've been getting the actual manga for Berserk and then reading Vagabond online. How are you liking them?
