This weekend, I watched episode 1031 of One Piece. I started watching One Piece during 2020's quarantine and caught up recently. It took me a long time, but I love the show and its characters - they got me through some tough times! In this episode, the main character Luffy continues his battle with one of the strongest characters in the series - Kaido, who can change into a dragon. He is left to fight one-on-one, and both of them are significantly injured at this point in the fight. Other characters who are members of Luffy's pirate crew, Nami and Usopp, fight off some lesser enemies in other scenes, but the main concern at this point in the show is Luffy's epic battle. The episode was packed with action, good animation, bright colors, and dramatic scenes.
I was surprised that my learning in Japanese class for just two weeks has changed some of how I watch the show. I was able to read the parts of the episode title that were in hiragana, and I could also recognize some connecting participles such as "no" "ni" or "wa." In terms of Japanese culture, I recognized different suffixes to people's names that we don't use in class. We only use -san and -sensei, but in the show, they used -chan to describe a little girl and -kun to describe a little boy, as well as -sama after Kaido's name, because he is an "Emperor of the Sea." Overall, I can't wait to learn more Japanese and see how my experience watching anime changes as I do. 'Til next week!
Wow! I can't believe you are up to date with One Piece. I didn't know there were over 1000 episodes now. That really takes some dedication, couldn't be me. I love how this blog post about a single episode of a show was packed with all this passion. Keep up the good work ; )
